Line is Teaming Up with Sony and LG to Build Its Own Digital Assistant

Yes, you have heard that right. Line is developing its own voice-activated assistant that could possibly help this incredible messaging app compete with Google and Amazon.

All this happened yesterday at the Mobile World Congress trade show, where the CEO of Line, Takeshi Idezawa highlighted the company’s plan which clearly suggests that Line wants to think beyond just smartphones. And, in result, the company has collaborated with Sony and LG to build its own digital assistant that could compete with voice-activated devices such as Google’s home and Amazon’s Echo.

We are still short of complete details, but Line promises all the basic features including the ability to check weather, order products, update calendar and listen to news. However, some surprising features such as facial recognition and the ability to answer complicated questions will be there to stand it out from competitors.

Clova, Line’s assistant, will be available as a smartphone app and speaker called Wave, and expected to be released sometime in summer. As the company’s target market is Asia, therefore it looks optimistic to give a solid tough time to its competitors.
