Beverly Hills to Introduce Autonomous Cars for Public Transportation

Beverly Hills to Introduce Autonomous Cars for Public Transportation

In next couple of years, citizens of Beverly Hills will no longer be traveling by traditional buses and cars for sure.

It seems that the officials of Beverly Hills care for their citizens. And, because of this reason they have passed a resolution to introduce driverless cars for the convenience of their people.

It is surely going to be an incredible initiative which will allow a person to book a driverless car from smartphone, instead of standing on a bus stop.

“This is a game-changer for Beverly Hills and, we hope, for the region,” said Mirisch in a press release. “Beverly Hills is the perfect community to take the lead to make this technology a reality. It is now both feasible and safe for autonomous cars to be on the road.”

In order to make this plan a big reality, instead of going into contract with automobile giants like Mercedes or Audi, Beverly Hills is planning to collaborate with Google and Tesla.

The city which is popularly known as a home to many Hollywood celebrities will soon become the center of attraction because of its autonomous cars.

What is your take on it? How do you see this decision? We would love to hear from you…

Google Android N Developer Preview – An Unexpected Revelation

To all Android fans out there, there’s good news for you – Google has unveiled its new OS, the Android N. However, you can’t use it unless you are a developer, since it is the developers preview.

The New OS, which was expected to be revealed at the I/O Conference this May just like old times, has been released two months earlier. Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google Head of Andoird, said, “It’s earlier than ever, it’s easier to try and we’re expanding the ways for you to give us feedback. We want to hear from you and iterate on the platform with you – that’s what makes Android stronger.”

The primary reason for the earlier than expected release of the developer’s preview is, of course, to let the users give their critical feedback on the OS so it can be further tweaked and improved for the final version.

Regardless, this earlier release has brought with it an “early-bird” look into the amazing features Android N will offer. Let’s take a quick look at some of those features:

The Most Awaited, Split-Screen View

Multitasking has always been a difficult feature to offer on mobiles, and even on some tablets. However, with the Android N OS, users can interact with two apps simultaneously with either side-by-side view or one-above-the-other. Best of all, the split views can be resized as per the users’ needs.

Improved Battery Life

Having a long lasting battery is every user’s desire. In its new Android, Google has tweaked and enhanced the Doze feature to amplify the battery life of your mobile. In the last version of the Doze feature, Doze kicks in if the mobile is left idle for a while. However, in the latest version the power-saving mode will trigger immediately when the screen turns off.

Grouped Notifications

Notifications have not always been very useful for alerts because too many notifications clutter up the screen and mess up the important alerts. With the bundled notifications in Android N, notifications from the same app will grouped up in a single tab.

Reply to Notifications

It won’t be long when the days of tapping notification and redirecting to the app to reply. The new Android N offers the inline replies feature that lets you respond or reply to the notifications right from the notification shades.

Enter Squishy Fingers – The Deep Sea Fauna Retriever

The deep-sea fauna is very delicate and fragile, and perhaps that is what makes it so precious to every marine biologist. However for years, biologists were unable to collect these deep-sea corals efficiently. Looks like the problem is finally solved, all thanks to “Squishy Fingers”- the robot with soft and spongy grabbers.

There’s a limit to what humans can do. They can dive into oceans even rough waters but diving too deep isn’t possible. To reach where no man (in-person) has reached before, robots are used. However, the robots used for collecting corals have heavy, rigid claws that make it unable to take the corals to surface with little or no damage.

That is what made Robert Wood, Harvard engineer and a Roboticist, and David Gruber, a marine biologist, to team up and create a robot that can safely extract corals from deep sea and take them to the surface for study.

The team took inspiration from the sea creatures like snake or tube worm to come up with two different shapes grabbers. One works like a pair of hands and the other wrap itself around the corals to recover them safely. The soft grabbers were developed using materials like fiberglass and silicone, along with Kevlar for reinforcement. Another reason for using such materials is to make the technology inexpensive and easily reproducible and repairable.

The team conducted its first field test back in May 2015 in the Northern Red Sea, making dozens of successful dives and retrieving precious samples of deep-sea corals.

The team also hopes that the technology will be highly useful in above-water operations as well including gene expression analysis, biological sampling, archaeology, etc. The roboticist, Robert Wood, also plans to integrate the sense of touch technology as well into the ROV to enable the operator feel the grab as well.

Dream Come True – Back to the Future’s Self-Drying Jacket Is Finally Here!

Many Back to the Future fans have been desperately waiting for years for the crazy inventions depicted in the movie to come to real life. Most of those doohickeys have been invented already – or at least their prototype versions, such as the hover board.

Among those terrific inventions was Marty McFly’s self-drying jacket. When soaked, the jacket could auto-dry itself by releasing high-pressure air that would puff-up the jacket and dry it within seconds…and yes all the while drying out Marty’s face and hair….

Wondering why I’m reminding you that scene? Guest what! The self-drying jacket is finally invented and already attracting huge amount of funding on KickStarter.

falyon-self-drying-jacket-gif

Falyon, a wearable tech start-up, has successfully created the iconic self-drying jacket from Back to the Future movie. According to what the start-up claims, unlike the movie version where the jacket dries itself within second, this 21st century jacket would take a minute or two to completely dry out by circulating high-pressure air released from the built-in amplifiers.

falyon-self-drying-jacket

The jacket is made up of a breathable material that is also waterproof. The amplifiers are powered by a lightweight battery that sneakily sits in the jacket’s pocket. Falyon claims that the battery weighs as same as an iPhone 6. Plus, the jacket is extremely tech-friendly, i.e., you can fit in as many gadgets as there are pockets in it.

The start-up tried its best to keep the jacket similar to the iconic, Marty Mcfly’s jacket in all aspects like the color of the jacket (red and charcoal color) and the vents near the collar that expels the air near the wearer’s face and hair. However, the only disappointing thing is that the jacket doesn’t talk.

Other than the red and charcoal color, the jacket is also available in several other colors such as cobalt, blue, metallic silver, etc. According to Falyon, the product will be available in April 2016.

Don’t Go Camping around Stores This Black Friday without Checking out Google’s Findings

The annual shopping frenzy of Black Friday is upon us. The day fills us with the mix feelings of excitement and worry. Excited because of the best deals ever, and worried because of the most crowded day of the year.

So, if you’re feeling more worried than excited due to thought of throwing yourself into an insane number of crowds all going for the same deals as you, don’t worry. This black Friday, Google, the Search Engine giant, has got you all covered.

In its latest blog “Think with Google”, Google has prepared for you an ultimate survival plan (an infographics) on how you can easily avoid the overwhelming crowd and find the best time to hit the stores.

The anonymized data presented in the form of an infographic was collected last year on Black Friday. The data was collected from the device of users who turned on History Location while shopping. Well, the result is something every Black Friday shopper needs to see.

According to the findings, morning is the ideal time to hit the stores on Black Friday, and afternoon should be avoided. The data has hampered the wrongly-held belief of people who has always thought that afternoon is the best time for shopping.

As you can see on the image below that the traffic at almost all the retailing stores peaks at around 2pm to 4pm and starts declining from 6pm and on words.

The huge traffic pattern and timing isn’t the startling data that Google has unveiled through its infographics. Perhaps, the most surprising finding it has presented is that Black Friday isn’t the only gigantic shopping day of the year. In fact, Christmas Eve is the day when hundreds of people flock to discount stores for Christmas gifts.

Lastly, Google has also predicted in the report that this year almost 82% of the users will check the price tags on their mobiles while purchasing in stores.
